Meet Your Tutor
Dr. Jane Orton has marked exam papers and has a good understanding of what it takes to get the best grades – but she also believes in bringing history to life by looking at unsolved mysteries, unusual historical anecdotes and heated academic debates!
All of Jane’s academic degrees have a strong historical element. Her undergraduate and first Masters’ degrees especially focused on political and international relations history, and the history of political thought. Her second Masters’ looked at Tibetan political history and her PhD was again based on intellectual history (the influence of mathematics on ancient philosophy). Jane also has university level exam marking experience and has designed and taught courses at the University of Edinburgh.

“Having transferred university courses from Politics to History I needed to quickly and comprehensively get up to a 2nd year standard. Jane's knowledge and skill as a teacher has been a great help in achieving that, and I now feel much more confident! I would definitely recommend her.”
- Robin
“Dr. Orton's encouragement and support throughout the process were immensely motivating. She was always available to answer my questions and provided constructive criticism that helped me grow as a researcher.”
- Bartosz
Jane says:
“Quite often students are surprised to find how quickly sessions go by and how much material we’ve covered in the time we’ve spent together.
We might spend one session focusing on content for a particular topic, followed by another session devoted to essay planning, feedback and what examiners are looking for. Our tutorials will be geared towards what you need to know for your exams, but we won’t lose sight of what makes your topic exciting.”
