FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Supporting your studies

Personalised, One-on-One Tuition with Academic Experts

University is a time of great intellectual independence and an opportunity to specialise in the subjects you love, but it can be intimidating to work without regular support. We provide regular or ad hoc personal online tuition on topics in most areas of the humanities, including History, Philosophy, Politics, Religious Studies, Theology, Anthropology, Folklore, Area Studies, Classics and Ancient History. You will receive personalised tuition with trained academics, enhancing your understanding of the course material through fun and rigorous discussion. In addition, you will have in-depth, individual feedback on your essays, close progress monitoring and personalised attention from an academic expert!

“Great Tutor. Jane is very reliable and can work flexible hours which is great for college and university students. Working with Jane has improved my work from 2:2s to firsts.”

- Harriet

Dr. Orton's expertise and insightful feedback helped me refine and present my ideas more coherently. She provided valuable advice on structuring my proposal, ensuring it met the academic standards expected by the University. I highly recommend her to any student seeking to improve their academic work.

Meet Your Tutor

Dr. Jane Orton is an independent scholar with degrees from Durham, Oxford, Edinburgh and Bologna Universities, covering politics, philosophy, classics, religious studies, anthropology and history. She has sixteen years of tutoring and lecturing experience, as well as experience marking undergraduate exams. Depending on your topic, we might recommend that some tutorials are taken with one of our other fellows (for, example some language and history topics) but it’s likely you’ll be working with Jane in the first instance. Here, she describes what it’s like to work with her…

“She totally understands her craft and does a WONDERFUL JOB of helping me find literature for my papers. She helps me find good explanations and examples to prove my point, and she’s does a great job helping me understand what I am missing. She will reframe things in ways that helps me come up with new ideas to put into my papers. She is super kind and a wonderful person to work with. Worth every penny.”

- Jacqueline

Jane says:

“Quite often students are surprised to find how quickly sessions go by and how much material we’ve covered in the time we’ve spent together. We might spend one session focusing on content for a particular topic, followed by another session devoted to essay planning, feedback and what examiners are looking for. Our tutorials will be geared towards what you need to know, but we won’t lose sight of what makes your topic exciting.”

“It’s likely that you chose your topic as it interested you, and that interest needn’t be sacrificed for the sake of checking off a list of course requirements! I’m a huge believer in adventure – I’m also a boxer, I ride a Honda 600cc Hornet and have toured America on Harleys and other cruisers as a musician - and I don’t believe that being a scholar should mean being cut off from the real world or confined to a library. Your university studies should be exciting, empowering and part of your own intellectual adventure.”
