Meet Your Tutor

As part of her academic research, Dr. Jane Orton has done fieldwork and published in academic journals on major religions: Buddhism, Bön and indigenous religions in the Himalayas and Islam, Hinduism and Munda religion in the Sundarbans of Bangladesh. This means that your tutorials will be full of fascinating examples and case studies from across the world!

Jane’s research Masters’ at Oxford University focused on Tibetan Buddhist narratives as well as other religions in the Himalayas. Philosophy (in which she has a PhD) is a big part of Religious Studies A Level and Jane also has over ten years’ experience in tutoring the Christianity side of the course. Jane designed and taught courses at the University of Edinburgh when she was completing her PhD, and has university level and A Level exam marking experience. She has tutored students in the main UK exam boards, including AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, Eduquas and SQA.

“Jane was an absolutely first class religious education tutor for my niece who was studying for her A-levels. Her friendly, calm, but very focused and methodical approach, based on deep subject-matter knowledge meant that every session was really productive. Would definitely recommend.”

– Tim (A Level Religious Studies)

Excellent teaching standards. My niece is so much more confident about achieving a high grade in philosophy. Happy Niece!”

- Amber (A Level Religious Studies)

“Jane has been very professional working with my son to assess the areas of his Religious, Philosophical and Moral Higher course. His lessons have been via Skype and Jane has provided helpful written back up material and her lessons have been well planned and engaging.”

- Eileen (Highers Religious Studies)

“I’ve been fortunate to have Jane through my A levels. I’ve been provided with amazing resources and opportunities to grow my knowledge that has helped me enormously through my courses thanks to Jane’s work and dedication. I would highly recommend anyone to use her wide range of expertise as it will definitely be of great use!”

- Ethan (A Level Religious Studies)

“Extremely good Religious Studies tutor, very attentive and always ready to help even after tutorial hours!”

- Imogen (A-Level Religious Studies)

Jane says:

Quite often students are surprised to find how quickly sessions go by and how much material we’ve covered in the time we’ve spent together. We might spend one session focusing on content for a particular topic, followed by another session devoted to essay planning, feedback and what examiners are looking for. Our tutorials will be geared towards what you need to know for your exams, but we won’t lose sight of what makes your topic exciting.”

“It’s likely that you chose your topic as it interested you, and that interest needn’t be sacrificed for the sake of checking off a list of exam board requirements! I’m a huge believer in adventure – I’m also a boxer, I ride a Honda 600cc Hornet and have toured America on Harleys and other cruisers as a musician - and I don’t believe that being a scholar should mean being cut off from the real world or confined to a library. Your A Level studies should be exciting, empowering and part of your own intellectual adventure.”
